LA Rock ‘n’ Roll Half Marathon: Team WeNGUH Providing Information for the Upcoming Event

October 21, 2010 1 comment

When I first started these half marathons it was always hard to know where to get information and updates so I just wanted to quickly provide a few updates. We have some new people coming with us to the inaugural LA Rock ‘n’ Roll event so hopefully this makes it easier for them and for anyone else participating and checking out our website.

Race Information

Event Updates:

Fun Stuff

Competitor Wireless is a service that will update family and friends by text to say where you are at the race. I did a free promo with another company for the Long Beach Half Marathon and it was really cool. It was nice to get the updates and then have others text you or call you during the race to say, “Good job, keep going, you’re doing great!” It’s also nice to get the official time you crossed because the timers can be confusing. This is not an advertisement for CW and it does cost a few dollars but the amount of money it costs for the race, this is worth it. I won’t be using it but I encourage others to try it.

We hope these few links help you out before and during the race and thank you for continuing to view updates from our team members. We appreciate it and we hope to see you at the race!

TriRock: Announcing Entrance in First Triathlon

September 1, 2010 Leave a comment

It’s a little late in the game to be announcing that I am participating in the TriRock triathlon hosted by Competitor, the same people who made the Rock ‘n’ Roll running series. It’s the inaugural San Diego tri and it’s the kick off of the entire TriRock series. Kind of neat to be participating in the start of all the events to come.

I’ve been telling a few people about it and luckily some of the people that I know have either done a few themselves or know people that have or know something about one of the three parts. Everyday for a good two weeks I was learning knew things that I had to buy that were necessary to do the event. I learned how to do a few strokes, mostly freestyle and breast stroke. I know them poorly at best though, my technique is way off but that’s to be expected with only a few days to learn it. Thankfully, someone was letting me use their pools they worked at and taking a few minutes to teach me what to do or I would have been doing an even less efficient way than I am now.

In training so far my best is roughly 2300ft in the pool, I did a 26 mile bike ride from my college and back, and I’ve done a 65 minute run at a little over 4 miles, this isn’t all in the same day though. I think I have enough endurance to be able to do it but I feel like I’m going to be dead tired doing this, especially at the end of it. I think it’s going to be hard to walk afterword for a little bit which is going to make it hard to get around to my classes if they’re back to back. But I think I have enough of what it takes.

I hope I do have enough because I’ve used a little over $300 of other people’s money for this event, family and friends sponsoring financially and some of their time. If it wasn’t for my grandpa, I would be sleeping in my car before the event. If it wasn’t for Kevin, friend, I would probably have drown in the swim portion, definitely wouldn’t have made it.

Triple Crown 2011: Running on Beautiful Beachfronts

  1. Tri-City Medical Center Carlsbad
  2. La Jolla Half Marathon
  3. America’s Finest City (San Diego)

I was looking at a Running USA booklet the San Francisco marathon was handing out. I found an event called, “America’s Finest City” run, so I went to their website. I wanted to try and do at least one more run for this summer. Unfortunately, it was sold out for this year but I saw something about a Carlsbad run. I clicked on the link and saw that it was much closer than most of the events I’ve been doing this year. So, I looked at the event information and saw that runners have 4.5 hours to finish. The run was also in January which was perfect because it’s not during the semester. I signed up for it and kept looking at the information.

I noticed something that said Triple Crown and clicked on it. It pointed to two other runs, La Jolla and San Diego run. I signed up for La Jolla and went back to the Carlsbad website. The San Diego registration is currently unavailable. The series boasts that runners and walkers will be enjoying beautiful beach front property for their marathons and half marathons. The events have been going for a long time, at least thirty years. Early registration is the most inexpensive I’ve seen yet with Carlsbad at $80 and La Jolla at $60.

The best part of this series is the charities they are supporting. The Carlsbad website has a page “Run for a Reason” that lists a ton of charities. Many of them I have been working with for a while now including the American Liver Foundation and the American Cancer Society. And guess who they also support? Donate Life. I’m sold.

So, I am announcing that I will be at the Triple Crown events for 2011 and I’m already trying to coerce the team into going. If you would like to join us, please send us an email or leave a comment. I, and hopefully we, will see you there!
